2 Crouching, 2 Hidden

crouchingAng Lee has failed to reach the success of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” since it enraptured the movie-going public four years ago. His most recent film, “Brokeback Mountain,” which has come to affectionately be known as “The Gay Cowboy Movie,” is set to be released next weekend to uncomfortable audiences across America (mostly blue states). The artistic and risky choice for Lee follows “Hulk,” which also could have been called “Blah.”

So what’s a director to do to recapture his prominence?

How about a sequel? Or better yet, a prequel?

Lee recently told MTV that he is indeed flirting with revisiting “Crouching Tiger.”

“It would be a prequel, if it happens,” Lee said of revisiting the world of majestic martial artistry. Currently in the earliest stages of pre-production, Lee cautioned that he won’t make the film until he’s found the proper entry point. “I haven’t found a new passion equivalent to the first one,” Lee assured “Dragon” loyalists. Stars of the breakout 2000 film — including Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang — have yet to sign on to reprise their characters. Instead of worrying about them, however, Lee is keeping his focus on getting “Dragon” in proper shape to breathe fire once again. “Once I have the script, we’ll see what happens with the actors.” …

Even though I loathe sequels as much as I loathe remakes, I’m willing to believe my boy Ang hasn’t gone Hollywood on us by dipping back to a past success for some cash and notoriety. His decision to potentially return to “Crouching Tiger” is probably forged by his love for the process of making such a film. His resume proves he’s legit.

As Norm MacDonald might say, I bet it’ll have a lot of kicking, and a lot of flying.

  1. i’m actually pretty excited about the gay cowboy movie…

  2. I would love to see a movie about Lee Moo Bai (no idea how to spell this properly and I am not about to open a tab and go to imdb just so that I can spell it correctly in a comment on crapfilter), since his character was the shiz of all nits.
