Sweet sweet chaos

13 January 2006 :: By justincharlesharlan

Norway’s Silence the Foe certainly has done their share of listening to The Refused from what I can tell. That isn’t to say they aren’t original or that they simply reproduce the music of the seminal hardcore/punk act, but the influence is very evident. In fact, the first time I listened to this EP, the immediate comparison to The Refused came to mind.

As an avid fan of The Refused (and a fan of their current endeavors including The (International) Noise Conspiracy), I appreciated this CD from that aforementioned first listen. The first song on the 7-song EP (“Chaotic Mind”) is perhaps my favorite, and is certainly the perfect opener. The lyrics “Heart to heart, chaotic mind” begin as a chant with a cool synth effect in the background before the guitars and Fugazi-esque bass line kicks in. If you are anything like this reviewer here, you’ll be singing and yelling along by the end of the first minute of the track.

The rest of the CD follows suit, tearing through the remaining six songs in a fury of guitars, synthesizers, melodic sing-alongs, and flesh eating screams. It truly is a masterwork of chaos, a controlled and prefected chaos if you will. This isn’t the hardest or loudest or craziest CD I’ver ever heard, but it does do a better job at combining the harshness and brutality with melody and dancability than most. Silence the Foe channels the spirit of punk rock and tries to breathe life into the hurting genre that is hardcore. This ain’t another emo-metal-trendi-core band hopping on the bandwagon and this EP is proof of that.

For a taste, you can download “Playing With the Old Me” from the Lujo Records website. You will be pleased in doing so, well unless you are one of those K-Fed listenin’, Lindsay Lohan CD-ownin’, ex-N’Sync fans. If you can appreciate punk rock, hardcore, or any combination thereof, then go hit up this download and pick up this CD. All in all a solid rock and/or roll release!
