Nip/Tuck Season 2, Disc 3
Most TV Dads seem to fall into either the good-hearted buffoon role or the holier than thou, never made a mistake voice of reason. See most every sitcom for the former (my own dad asked once why they don’t change the category from “sitcom” to “stupid dads”). The fathers on the WB are good examples of the latter. Shows like 7th Heaven try to create these modern day Atticus Finch archetypes that ultimately ring false.
But if I had to choose our generation’s Atticus Finch, it would be Nip/Tuck’s Sean McNamara. Yes, our generation’s Atticus has tied meat to a mobster’s corpse in order to lure alligators, but would you expect any less? The real Atticus had a tough court case, but the morality was pretty easy to discern. He didn’t have to deal with Latino gangs, a midlife crisis, or separating two conjoined twins….and he definitely didn’t have a partner that fucked half his clientele.
Atticus also never had to find out that said partner fucked his dead wife years ago, meaning Scout wasn’t even his kid. In this block of eps, Sean finally finds out the truth about Matt, Christian, and Julia, and it is devastating to watch. Imagine a deleted scene in Mockingbird where Gregory Peck is so crushed by the court’s decision that he completely loses it…that’s what happens here. He then moves to dissolve his partnerships with both his wife and his best friend. After the final show, we feel that Christian and Sean will at least stay together professionally, if not best-friendly. Threesomes with hookers can have therapeutic effects after all.
Also of note is the first mention of the infamous serial rapist, The Carver. Peter Braunstein started watching right around here I guess. The Carver is not seen, only his handiwork. He rapes poor Leslie Bibb, then slashes her mouth open, Kakihara-style. The symbolism is also excellent in the last episode. Sean is hoping to separate his personal connections, all the while cutting apart a pair of conjoined twins. The Dead Ringers scrubs are no accident either.
