Michael returns with a bang to ‘Lost’

3 May 2006 :: By Chris Coleman

Wes is off this week for finals, so I’ll be filling in. If you haven’t watched this episode yet, and don’t want it to be ruined, just stop reading. Any complaints about how now the episode is ruined for you will only serve to get you mocked. With that said, here we go…

Wow! Seventeen kinds of shit just hit seventeen kinds of fans this week on the island!

Ana LuciaOK, so we’re dealing with an Ana Lucia episode, that isn’t really much of an Ana Lucia episode, and suffice to say, this is the last Ana Lucia episode. We didn’t really learn a whole lot about Ana Lucia, other than the fact that she’s got a stronger connection to Jack’s dad than anybody could have really predicted. Jack’s dad also had a run-in with Sawyer (literally) in Sydney, although I don’t really see this being any sort of clue about anything, since their relationship is already known.

I think this might just be a reminder that they met in a bar, since it’s not a subject that’s been explored for quite a while. Maybe we’ll get another clue next week, but for now there’s not a whole lot there. We definitely learned a lot more about Jack’s dad than Ana Lucia, mostly because Ana Lucia is a dead end storyline. The episode also drifted uncharacteristically between more groups of the island residents than usual. The subplot with Hurley and Libby seemed kind of aimless, until the shocker ending.

On one hand, yeah, this episode did end with a huge twist. On the other hand, everybody knew that Libby and Ana Lucia weren’t going to make it past the end of the season.

So what does all this mean?

MichaelIs Michael one of the Others? I really doubt it. I certainly don’t think he was telling Jack the truth about the others. I don’t believe that they live in teepees and only have two guns. Didn’t Jack end up handing over at least that many in the episode where he went to confront them? Also, don’t forget that they shot Sawyer on the raft at the end of last season. And furthermore, we know they’re not dirty with no shoes. We learned that they have medical equipment and plenty of supplies, and that they’ve also got some reall nice theater supplies.

But that’s obvious. We’re left with two possibilities concerning Michael. He either joined up with the Others or he’s working at their mercy. Personally I feel that the Others were holding all the aces as far as getting Walt back, and Michael agreed to kill Ana Lucia in order to get his son back.

Libby is dead just because she showed up in the wrong place at the wrong time (let’s ignore her real-life issues). I’ll bet real American dollars that Michael did all of this out of desperation, and not because they’ve got plasma TVs and filet mignon on the other side of the island.

So what happens next?

Clearly Michael can’t let Jack, Locke, Kate, etc. go to war with the Others now. If he did make a deal with them, all bets will certainly be off if the fighting 815th shows up with guns blazing.

I think that we’re due for another Jack episode soon, since this episode’s flashbacks focused so heavily on his father. I think we may get a little bit more Ana Lucia in there, but it seems like she’s played her part.

I’m a little concerned about the Libby in the mental institution scene from Hurley’s last episode. She’s dead and written off the show, and I’m worried that we may never find out exactly what she was doing there, or why and how she followed Hurley to Australia.

That’s about all I’ve got. Did I miss anything? Discuss!

I’m thinking Michael may lead Jack and co. into a trap with the Others, not that he has to stop them from fighting them.

Maybe the producers were just ticked off that the two actresses got busted for DUI, and wanted to send them a message. Message received.

  3. Chris,

According to an article on Entertainment Weekly, that is not the case. The producers claim that Ana Lu’s role was shortlived to begin with. http://www.ew.com/ew/article/commentary/0,6115,1190806_3_0_,00.html

  4. Yeah, I just read that article too. As much as I’d like to believe it, it sounds like damage control. But to lend credibility to that, I always thought she was sort of a big name (not that she’s a huge name) to land a permanent spot on a serial TV show that’s threatening to never conclude.

  5. Should be doing my take-home exam, but….

I have a new theory. And that is, no matter what kind of theories anyone comes up with, there’s no possible way to predict where the writers are going to go with the show. I was completely taken off-guard last night. The next three weeks should be great.

I’m convinced that Michael is officially an ‘Other’ and not just working at their mercy. But I cannot comprehend the ramifications of that yet, and damnit I won’t have time to do so until the weekend.

Also, I’m sure someone on the internet is already on it, but there’s a new distinction among the survivors that needs to be addressed: the Good Ones and the Bad Ones. Henry called John Locke a Good One, they took Walt for presumably the same reason, and Ana-Lucia was killed for being a Bad One (among other reasons). Jack also told Kate that they didn’t want her when they had her tied up, so she must also be a Bad One.

    Spoiler-Alert:
Next week is Eko-centric, the following week is Michael-centric, and the episode will focus on what he was doing while away from the Camp. The finale is Desmond-centric. Kudos to Chris for taking over my duties while I *cough* work diligently on my Bankruptcy exam.

  6. I disagree that he was told, by the others, to kill Ana Lucia. IMO he was asked to get “Henry Gale” back, in exchange for Walt (a lie by the others).

I suppose, we’ll just have to wait.

  7. In regards to the last episode with Ana Lucia, I believe “Henry Gale” has some special powers as well.

Why did Ana Lucia give him a knife to cut himself loose and not shoot him? I think he has the ability to somehow control people … and dive into their thoughts and/or predict a certain outcome. She untied him, didn’t get shot by her, and then had Michael kill her (she is a “bad one”). Maybe he knew what was going to happen? He’s also very manipulative …

I also believe Michael may have been brainwashed during his time out in the jungle.

  8. you people r fucking fuckups and retards

    Your mama.

  10. I’m with Colin, I think he was trying to rescue Henry by any means and not specifically Kill Anna-lucia. The reason Anna-lucia cut henry free was so that she could kill him and make it look like an escape attempt, rather than just a murder. I’m also not certain Libby is dead (yet?) she was carring folded up blankets (for her picnic with hurley) and was shot in the stomach, so prehaps they stopped the bullet enough to save her life, long enough to tell the rest of the surviors what happened. Also did michael kill himself or just shoot himself in the arm?

  11. another possibility is that michael was changed into an other and since henry faild to capture lock michael was sent to set up henry and make it look like he killed ana lucia and libby and shot michael in the arm.

This Hanso ad appeared in today’s Phila. Daily News

  13. why oh why did they do the hurley episode the other week? Not that I didn’t enjoy it but the only useful bit of information to the rest of the plot was that libby was in the same mental institution as him.

Now, to do that and then kill her off straight away seems a bit strange. I thought we would at least see more interaction between the two and perhaps some more info on how she came to the island.

  14. ive seen ep 22 but i wont say what happens with mr.e and j.locke, buy it does have something very much 2 do with the ? . think logical ana- lucia cut h.gale loose so that she could make his murder look like self defense so thats where michaels plane of thought is at.

  15. OK. So, here’s my take.

One of the byproducts of the Dharma Project (or maybe the focus) is an aerosol, fast-acting mind-control substance. In the control of “the Great Man” that Henry was babbling on about.

If you leave out the existential reasons for everyone seeing people from their past, consider that maybe there are very faint trace elements of the substance floating around on the island (leaks from storage?) and the Losties simply stumble into pockets of it now and again.

Also, it would explain why the Others can sweep in and take people away so quickly as well as Micheal changing so radically.

I realize that Micheal has been under stress, but the glib “I’m sorry” and the putting a slug into AL seemed WAY out of character — Walt or no.

    So there it is.

I’ve just watched the shocking episode.Goodbye Anna - what a shame. I loved her character.
My theory is simple (it’s the characters who are complicated) the hatches serve separate scientific experiments in certain locations of the island; the experiments however share one thing in common - human guinea pigs. The map that Loche saw is key and clearly shows a question mark on the ‘central hatch’, is this hatch housing the magnetic force?
Season 3 will be the discovery of these scientists and the experiments on certain Lost characters.

  17. i think that micheal has come BACK JUST TO GET lock to the others camp henry became quite addiquent that the others wanted lock because he was a good person
